We Came to be Through Necessity Not by Choice
In 1993, I was three days from leaving for college to become an Engineer, and My Mimi (grandmother) called me in tears to tell me she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She asked me to move home with her and help her adjust to this horrible disease. She passed away in 2002, almost ten years to the day. Fourteen months later, I was scheduled to start The University of Georgia to pursue my engineering degree. Then, my mother took a fall down a spiral staircase after tripping over her dogs. She was hospitalized with two subdural Hematomas and, unfortunately, had lost the ability to access her short-term memory. My mother passed away in March 2023. So, after taking care of my grandmother for almost ten years and my mother for over 20 years, I spent almost all of my adult life trying to figure out how to provide my dearest mother the care I wanted her to have. After hiring dozens of caregiver agencies I finally realized in 2016 it was not possible with the selection available in the Baton Rouge Area at that time to find the type of care my family expected for our loved one. She locked the doors out of habit, and in 2016 on a Saturday night, I received a phone call from my mother's neighbor. There was a lady was screaming to give her the spare house key so she could be let back in my mother's home. The neighbor immediately called me and let me know the caregiver was locked out and smelled of alcohol. When I got there mom had tripped over the runner rug in front of the front door broke her hip on the floor and wedged herself theinto corner of the fourier and I dialed 911 as the caregiver begged me not to because she was just fine. When we got to the hospital my siblings and father got a blank notebook and put all of our areas of expertise together to start a new kind of care. This was where we started and there is not anothotherer agency that offers the quality or unique treatment of its clients in the United States of America.
